Caustic soda (also known as sodium hydroxide, lye or NaOH) is a solid white product supplied as flakes. It is a highly caustic base and alkali, and in contact with the skin it can cause severe burns. It is a versatile product used in a wide variety of processes.
Sodium hydroxide is used in many industries: in the manufacture of pulp and paper, textiles, drinking water, soaps and detergents, and as a drain cleaner. It is one of the most widely used chemicals in the world.
Main caustic soda applications
Aluminium production
Used to dissolve bauxite ore, the raw material for aluminium production, in the Bayer process.
Soap and detergent
Used in saponification, the chemical process that converts fats and vegetable oils into soap, and to manufacture anionic surfactants, a crucial component in most detergents and cleaning products.
Textiles
Used to process cotton and dye synthetic fibers such as nylon and polyester.
Pulp and paper
The largest application for caustic soda worldwide, including pulping and bleaching processes, deinking of waste paper and water treatment.
Water treatment and food
Used to raise the pH of water supplies and reduce corrosion, and in food processing such as peeling fruits and vegetables, cocoa processing and caramel coloring production.
